Game Description: The Gauntlet is a card drinking game in which the values prescribed to each card determine the state of play. The booby price is known as “The Gauntlet,” which equals the maximum number of penalty drinks to be consumed. This is one of the more complicated drinking games, with a whole raft of rules which need to be adhered to. It is possible to abridge the game somewhat by excluding certain cards, so reserve that right if your friends don’t have the time, patience or attention spans to play The Gauntlet in all of its glory…
Number of Players: Minimum of three, maximum of six.
You Will Need: Drinks, a pack of cards and some friends.
How to Play: Assign one player the role of dealer, who then shuffles the cards and asks the each of the other players to choose “red” or “black.” The dealer then selects a card, and if the player has guessed wrong he has to drink according to the rules, below. Next, the dealer gives each player two cards. Players should look at their individual cards, but keep them hidden. The dealer then asks each player whether the card will be higher or lower than the first card the dealer selected. The final round before the “Gauntlet” is the dealer asking players to select a suit. The players who guess correctly get to select those players who will “run the gauntlet”…
Rules of the Game:
Feel free to modify the rules a little for ease of playing. You can also change the number of penalty drinks to something more manageable if the levels are a bit high for most players’ thirsts.
The key rules of The Gauntlet are:
PLAYER GUESSES CORRECTLY THE CARD’S COLOR: If the player correctly guesses the color of the card, the player gets to PASS TWO DRINKS onto another player.
PLAYER GUESSES INCORRECTLY THE CARD’S COLOR: The player incorrectly guessing the color of the card as to DRINK TWO CUPS OF BEER from players who guessed right.
PLAYER CORRECTLY GUESSES IF THE CARD IS HIGHER OR LOWER: The player gets to pass FOUR DRINKS onto another player.
PLAYER INCORRECTLY GUESSES IF THE CARD IS HIGHER OR LOWER: The penalty is to take FOUR DRINKS.
PLAYER CORRECTLY GUESSES THE SUIT: The player gets to bestow onto another player FIVE DRINKS and choose who will enter “The Gauntlet.”
PLAYER INCORRECTLY GUESSES THE SUIT: The player who incorrectly guesses the suit has to drink FIVE DRINKS as a penalty, known as “The Gauntlet.”
You Lose: If you are selected for the Gauntlet. If double-lose if you are selected for The Gauntlet and fail to successfully consume all of the five drinks/ the maximum number of drinks if you have amended the quantities.
