Drinking Games A-Z: Irish Quarters

How to play Irish quartersIrish Quarters is a really fun, quick-paced speed focused, coin drinking game that is perfect for just getting down and playing fast and furious. Be aware that the drinking penalties can be pretty high but can be modified.

Sip Score: **** (Medium- High Sipping game)

Game Description Irish Quarters is a speed-drinking game that encompasses elements of coin spinning in order to count time. It’s a hoot to play but can be pretty intense, so make sure you can keep up before you play. The aim of playing Irish Quarters is a simple and effective one; just drink, and drink fast. Specifically, players are challenged to drink faster than it takes for a spinning coin to cease its pirouette.

Number of Players:  Minimum of two.

You Will Need: Plastic cups, beer and a quarter or similar coin.

How to Play: Fill a plastic cup per player with equal measures of beer. Decide which player will go first. That player gets to start by spinning the quarter (or other coin). The aim is to drink the whole cup of beer before the coin stops spinning, so the first player has to immediately start drinking when the coin starts spinning. Depending on this player’s success to finish their drink before the coin stops spinning means he may need to take a penalty (see Rules of the Game, below). It will be the next player’s turn, to do the same. Play as many round of this game as you want or can handle, but PLEASE be sure to not drink more than you can handle.

Rules of the Game:

It is possible to modify the rules of the game. You can lower the beer-drinking penalties or replace them with dares if all players agree to this prior to commencing play.

FAILURE TO FINISH DRINKING BEFORE COIN STOPS SPINNING: If a player fails to finish his drink before the coin stops spinning, his forfeit is to DO IT AGAIN. That’s right. Re-fill your cup and try again, loser. This time, with feeling! It’s a pretty brutal rule, but it acts as an incentive to try your best the first time around!

SUCCESSFULLY FINISH DRINKING BEFORE COIN STOPS SPINNING:Successful drinkers who finish their drinks before the coin stops spinning can hold their heads high (or bob them around tipsily) as play moves onto the next participant…PASS!

You Lose: If the coin beats you. Then, the beer will beat you, my friend. If you have failed to finish your drink(s) before the coin stops spinning the most number of times, you lose. You double-lose because you will also most likely be the drunkest player, having consumed a penalty drink each time you wre out of time.

Safety Disclaimer: As the emphasis of playing Irish Quarters is on speed, play safely and know your limits. Don’t drink more than you feel you are able to and if you need to bow out of the game or pass on a beer penalty, either stop playing or do it with water instead. Have fun!
